Half a Prayer: The Dallas Cowboys and Roy Williams
Half of my prayers have been answered! Or so I thought…
Reading about Roy Williams’ recent signing with the Dallas Cowboys makes me happy. Finally the 6′3” speedster has a legitimate team and quarterback to flourish with. With this new offense, he can provide another headache for secondaries with star Terrell Owens on the opposite side. The Cowboys are certainly a playoff contender, and arguably one of the top three teams in the NFL.
Oh yeah, Tony Romo is out for a month. Quite the gutshot! Brad Johnson will have the duties under center for the next four weeks, and it comes with the worst timing. Williams comes to a new, excellent team led by an outstanding Quarterback in Tony Romo, and finds himself waiting four weeks to become part of their “real” offense. Williams will have to wait and see how things develop, the difficulty in adapting to a quarterback and his repertoire is hard enough. To have to do it twice, in a month, on a team which is expected to win regardless, seems insurmountable.
On the other side of the equation, how does Mr. Owens feel about this acquisition? He hasn’t grabbed substantial numbers so far this season, so another weapon may sound like a blow to his personal statistics. I love Terrell, but he needs his receptions and touchdowns more than anyone.
The Cowboys seem to be falling apart a bit on paper however, they grab a talented wide reciever to complement their star, and their Quarterback goes down for a month due to a broken pinkie. Terrance Newman is absent from the secondary for around a month due to a sports hernia, and Adam “Pacman” Jones fights his own security and is suspended for four more games.
The idea is this, the Cowboys need to win at least three out of their next four to keep the playoff pace. They face the Buccaneers, Giants and Redskins in three of those four meetings, all formidable teams to say the least. If they manage to grab three wins in the next month, Tony Romo, Terrance Newman and Adam Jones will hopefully be back in action, as will the high powered offense and super-glue secondary which the Cowboys should have. With those names, along with their other personnel, they should make an excellent run at the Super Bowl.
Yes I said it, Cowboys, Super Bowl.
